The shelter is made of nylon netting.  It is circular, 10" wide and 47" high.  At the top there is a hook, so that the shelter can be hung from something.  The shelter must be hung or it will collapse.

There is a slit in the netting about halfway up the shelter to insert a hand and place things in the shelter or take them out.

Cocoons can be placed in the bottom of the shelter while you wait for adults to emerge.

The shelter accomplishes three things.  It makes the moths easy to see from all sides.  When adults emerge from cocoons, they need to climb so that their wings unfold properly.  The shelter is easy for them to climb.  At night, and sometimes during the day, moths will fly.  They will not tear or harm their wings as much as with other housing options when flying inside the shelter.

If a shelter isn't purchased, I recommend placing cocoons in a 5 gallon aquarium or large box.

If you would like to make your own shelter, click on the link below for instructions.  They come from the teacher who came up with the basic idea for a shelter.

The flyer I sent out this winter does not mention shelters.  If you wish to use the flyer as an order, you must add the shelter order to it by hand.  Shelters are available now.
