Shown are several cocoons. Cocoons range in color from a dark maroon
to white. Cocoons come in two forms: loose and baggy, or tight and compact. Both cocoons and the adults
that emerge from them require minimal care and no special equipment. Cocoons can be kept in a 5-gallon aquarium
or a similar sized box. However, I do sell moth shelters. See products page. Also, linked
to the page describing the moth shelter (click on shelter picture) is an instruction page to build
your own (I promised the teacher who came up with the basic design). One good thing about a shelter is that the
adult does not beat up its wings as badly as when it is housed in a box or aquarium.
I cannot tell the sex of a moth within a cocoon by just examining the cocoon, and cannot guarantee what sex a moth will be. Generally speaking, females weigh more than males because they are carrying eggs. If you make mention on your order that you want me to try to give you males or females, I will try to do so based on weight and my best guess! Cecropia eat only in the larval stage (caterpillar), and neither the cocoons nor the adults need feeding. Adults emerge from cocoons after cocoons are kept at room temperature from 3 to 6 weeks. It is impossible to be more precise than that. If you want them to emerge later rather than earlier, they can be kept in an unheated room or garage until brought inside. They can also be kept in a refrigerator, although it is not my first choice for storage. The adult lives for 8-15 days, and then dies naturally. If the adult emerges during warm spring weather, it can be released. It is indigenous to almost anywhere in North America where there are deciduous trees and that is not semi-tropical. Each cocoon is sent with concise, easily understood instructions plus additional information about the cecropia moth. The success rate for adults emerging is well over 99% and consistently fine results are achieved. I guarantee each cocoon and if you are not satisfied with an adult I will return your purchase price or give you credit for a purchase next year. The quarantee also applies if the moth does not emerge before school is out for the summer. |
